You might have seen some false claims today on the internet…claims that “honoring a child’s transgender identity is harmful”. Please know that this view comes from a very small group of individuals (not all doctors) who call themselves the American College of Pediatricians. Please know this group is NOT representative of the opinions and views of a vast majority of pediatricians and pediatric affiliate members of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
The AAP has over 64,000 members and is a professional organization made of general and medical- and surgical-specialist pediatricians dedicated to the health, wellbeing and safety of infants, children and adolescents. The other organization has less than 200 members.
The AAP cares about educating its members, the public and policy makers of the evidence, while also upholding the basic tenets of family-centered, culturally sensitive care for all children and adolescents and their families.
In fact, a recent study published this month showed that when children were encouraged and supported to express their identities, they flourished. They had good mental health outcomes. In other words, they thrived.
Follow the blog of Gendermom: A Chronicle of fun and fear, or, daily life with my young trans daughter. You will not regret it. She is real, funny, nurturing and figuring things out one day at a time, just like other moms out there. She has 9 podcasts (and counting) and cute drawings that really bring these issues to light by being brave and sharing her and her daughter’s journey.
